Situated approximately 30km south of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Kingdom, in a vast crater, Lake Bosomtwi the most expansive natural body of fresh water in Ghana. It is also the deepest, reaching a maximum depth of 80-100m, and 10.7km2 in diameter. Some people believe that the lake was created by a volcanic action and others say it was created by a falling meteorite causing a crater to be formed however piles of heavy rainfall over the years filled the crater with water causing the lake level to rise.
The lake water size varies according to seasons in question, there are times it overflows it banks and other times the water level will be so low. The Lake houses fish verities such as endemic cichlid Hemichromis frempongi, and the near-endemic cichlids Tilapia busumana and T. discolor. Come let us go fishing in a traditional boat or canoe, an experience worth evoking. Located in Bantama, popularly known among the dwellers of Kumasi as “Gee” is the Okomfo Anokye Sword Site. The term Okomfo is a twi terminology meaning the ‘traditional priest,’ who has been the greatest priest in the Ashanti tradition. The legendry traditional or fetish priest, Okomfo Anokye, is accredited to be the man who conjured from the skies, the much revered Golden stool of the Asante, which is said to have happened on a Friday.
The Stool is supposed to “contain” the soul of the Asante nation. Okomfo Anokye was a very close confidante of the Asante monarch, King Osei Tutu. Historical accounts have it that Okomfo Anokye one day “planted” a sword in the ground, and told those present at the event that the day the sword would be uprooted, the Asante Kingdom would collapse. Numerous people over the years have tried to uproot the sword but all in vain. What a mighty legacy and magic left! Mole National Park is By far the most popular tourist attraction in the northern half of Ghana is the. In terms of size, it is the largest national park in the country, found on a Savannah woodland ecosystem. The Park is located in the West Gonja District Assembly area of the Northern Region of Ghana and lies between Latitude 9° 12’ and 10° 6’ North and to Longitudes 1° 25’ and 2° 17’ West. The Park is about 146 kilometres or two hour’s drive from Tamale, the regional capital, and 15 kilometres from Damongo the district headquarters of West Gonja District Assembly.
