16.02.2007 Presidential AideDrags Chronicle to Court A PRESIDENTIAL Aide at the seat of government has launched a legal battle against General Portfolio Limited, Publishers of The Chronicle, an Accra-based private Newspaper, for defamation at an Accra Fast Track Court (FTC) demanding punitive damages.
Alongside the publishers in the suit of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) big shot, Tommy Amematekpor, are: the Acting Editor of The Chronicle, Mr. J. Ato Kobbie and Kofi Amponsah, the author of an article headlined 'Johnson Avulete's Castle Meeting On DCEs,' the subject matter of the suit, as co-defendants. According to the plaintiff, the article published in the December 6, 2006 edition of The Chronicle contained false and disparaging materials about him and in the process injured his reputation earned over the years as a Presidential Aide. Mr. Amematekpor, in his suit dated January 22, 2007, is therefore claiming jointly and severally against the defendants, in addition to punitive damages, an exemplary compensation for libel. Furthermore, plaintiff is demanding an order of the court to perpetually restrain the defendants and each of them by themselves, servants or agents from publishing any further defamatory articles about him. Other claims requested for include an apology and "retraction of the story, giving the same prominence as the banner heading under which the story was carried including other orders deemed fit by the court. In his statement of claim, plaintiff is complaining of sections of the article that read: "during the selection process, it was widely rumoured that a lot of money had changed hands as part of the selection process" as well as "the Sanhedrin is made up of Mr. Kojo Mpiani, Tommy Amematekpor, a presidential hanger-on of no specific description and Ken Nuworsu, the NPP Chairman for the Volta Region. These are the very people who are tainted by the allegation. In effect, the President has constituted a court in which the judges are the prosecution as well as the jury." To the plaintiff, the words complained of meant that he together with other persons were engaged in acts of corruption and "guilty of extorting money from potential District Chief Executives (DCE's) for the purpose of offering them appointments as DCEs." Plaintiff further held that the words in the publication complained of described him as "a person who sticks to the President or the castle for personal gains, a sycophant or flatterer" with the 3rd defendant referring to him and others as 'Wretched Men.' Mr. Amematekpo was of the general view that the said words referred to, meant he and others were, 'distraught, unfortunate, distressingly bad, despicable and worthless,' and portrayed him as 'a dictator and an enemy of freedom of speech.' Plaintiff has consequently denied ever attending any meeting at the castle with the said Avulete as mentioned in The Chronicle publication and for that matter had been ridiculed, with his reputation severely damaged in the estimation of right thinking members of the society.

Accra, February 16, GNA -
The power outage that occurred around 1300 hours on Friday was due to a system collapse the Volta River Authority has announced. Ms Abla Fiadjoe, Acting Director Corporate Services, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that as a result of the system failure all units in Akosombo went out, leading to the power outage.
However, she said the engineers had been working assiduously on the problem and had in the process restored power to most parts of the country.
Ms Fiadjoe said the necessary efforts were being made to ensure full restoration of electricity to areas, which still did not have power.
Meanwhile, the engineers are investigating the cause of the system collapse to stem reoccurrence.

| IFC/World Bank sign agreement with Newmont Ghana Accra, Feb. 16, GNA -
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, on Friday signed a linkages cooperation agreement with Newmont Ghana Gold Limited to collaborate on supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The SME linkages programme is part of IFC's work with Newmont Ghana Gold on the Ahafo mine.
A statement signed by Dr Chris Anderson, Director, Corporate and External Affairs, said in July 2006, IFC signed a loan of 125 million dollars to the mine to support Ghana's mining sector, working with Newmont to help raise environmental standards and ensure that local communities benefited from the project.
Dr Anderson said the programme would also place a special emphasis on supporting women entrepreneurs and would incorporate HIV/AIDS into its training activities through the IFC Gender Entrepreneurship markets and the IFC Against AIDS programmes.
Mr Thierry Tanoh, IFC's Director for sub-Saharan Africa said: "IFC is very pleased to partner with Newmont in this joint endeavour to create and bring direct benefit for the communities in and around the Ahafo mine area.
He said the mine was generating demand for the wide variety of goods and services and the linkages programme would focus on creating opportunities for local businesses to respond to demand.
The statement said, with the funding from both IFC and Newmont, the three linkages programme would have three primary goals which would support the development of local businesses and to develop potential supplies and providers of goods and services to the mine.
The rest are to improve the competitiveness of local non-mining businesses, which would help develop a diversified local economy outside of the mining sector and to develop and improve the capacity of local business associations and institutions that can provide long-term sustainable business support, training and other services to the local business community.
Mr David Baker, Newmont's Vice President for Environmental Affairs and Sustainable Development, said one of our most basic objectives was to initiate the enhancement of the local economic opportunity process early in the mine life to allow for years of development in this area. "This partnership is an important step in creating long-term value within the communities around our operations," he added.Source: GNA
