Fort Tantumquery (Central Region of Ghana)
This English fort was built in the 1720s, at Otuam in the Central Region. It was relatively small, and was occupied for about a century. Only a few fragmentary ruins remain of it.
The "Fort Tantumquery" ("Tantumquery Fort") was located in Otuam village in Tantumquery in the Central region of Ghana.
It was one of several fortifications built by Europeans in the "Gold Coast", initially for trade gold and timber and subsequently to the slave trade to the Americas. |
According to history, the fort was erected by British forces in the 1720s, having been in office for about a century.
With the abolition of the slave trade in the UK (" Slave Trade Act ", 1807), and the provisions of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814, the fort lost its function. According to the" National Monuments Board "(EI 42, 1972), is a National Monument of Ghana. small, currently only traces of it remain. |
