Detty December is real, loud and expensive. It is also the month when flights, rooms, drivers and tempers are stretched to the limit. This year there is more: a new visa system, a new screening line at the airport, and Accra's two best-known beaches flattened by bulldozers weeks before the season. Here is what has actually changed, and how to get through December well.
If you came to Ghana last December, do not plan this one from memory. Five things have changed, and every one of them can cost you money or a missed flight if you do not know about it.
Since 25 May 2026, Ghana's old visa-free and visa-on-arrival arrangements are gone. Most non-African visitors, including British, American and European passport holders, need a paid e-Visa before they fly, at around USD 260 for a single entry. Most African nationals outside ECOWAS need a free ETA. Neither can be sorted at the airport.
Since early October, every departing passenger is pre-screened at the entrance to the Departure Hall, with scanners and sniffer dogs, before check-in. Ghana Airports Company now advises arriving at least three hours before your flight. In December, take that literally.
The Departure Hall is now for travelling passengers only. Families who used to walk relatives to the check-in desk will be stopped at the door. Say goodbye outside, and agree beforehand where your driver waits.
Laboma Beach was demolished on 13 September and La Pleasure Beach (Labadi) on 2 October 2026. The La side says Labadi should be running again in basic form by mid-November. Expect a cleared, simpler beach, not the bars and beach clubs of past Decembers.
Public transport fares rose by 8% from 26 September 2026, covering shared taxis, trotros and intercity buses. In December, private drivers and car hire rise much more than that, on demand alone.
The Ministry of Health declared a yellow fever outbreak in parts of the Upper West in October. Your yellow fever card has always been required for entry. Carry the original, and get proper travel-health advice if you plan to go north.

Terminal 3 handles international flights. In the last two weeks of December the arrivals area is one of the busiest, most chaotic places in West Africa: diaspora families, tour groups, drivers with name boards, hustlers with no name boards, and everyone's phone battery at 5%.
Save your accommodation's full address, a Ghana phone number for your host, and the exact map pin. "East Legon" is not an address. Screenshot your e-Visa or ETA approval, your yellow fever card and your booking confirmation, because airport Wi-Fi and roaming both fail exactly when you need them.
Pre-book your pickup. Match three things before you put a single bag in a car: the driver's name, the vehicle and number plate, and a phone call to the number you were given. Ignore anyone who approaches you saying "your driver sent me". Ride-hailing apps work in Accra, but in December pickups are slow, prices surge, and taxi drivers at the airport enclave have a long history of hostility towards app drivers.
Three hours before departure, minimum. Pre-screening at the hall entrance comes first, then check-in, then the normal security checkpoint. The newer scanners at the checkpoints mean you can usually keep laptops in your bag and shoes on, but the 100 ml rule for liquids still applies. Traffic on the Liberation Road approach in late December can add an hour on its own.
Change only a small amount at the airport, enough for the first day. Buy a local SIM from an official operator outlet, not from a man in the car park, and register it with your passport as required. Mobile Money runs daily life here, so ask your host to help set it up.
Drivers sell out in December. These are vetted options you can book before you fly: an airport pickup that includes free internet so you can reach your host the moment you land, a private vehicle with driver by the day, and a longer tour covering three destinations. Entrance fees are included in tour prices; tips are not included but always welcome.

Detty December in Accra runs roughly from mid-December to New Year's Day. The headline dates announced so far are below. Line-ups and venues change, sometimes in the last week, so check the organiser's own channels and buy tickets only from them.
Mr Eazi's party, the one that gave the season its name. Expect heavy traffic around the venue all evening and plan your ride home before you go in.
The flagship festival, formerly Afrochella, announced for El Wak Sports Stadium. Music, fashion and art over several days. Gate prices rise sharply as the dates approach, and fake tickets circulate every year.
Reported for late December at Laboma Beach. Laboma was demolished on 13 September, so confirm the venue directly with the organisers before you plan around it.

One honest warning. Accra in late December is a city of 5 million people plus the diaspora, on roads built for a fraction of that. A 10 km trip across town after 6 pm can take two hours. Choose where you stay by where your events are, not by the hotel photos.

For 25 years, Labadi was where Accra went to the beach. On 2 October 2026 soldiers and bulldozers cleared La Pleasure Beach, Polo Beach Club and the bars along the shore at 4 am. Laboma went three weeks earlier. If an older guide, including the previous version of this page, sends you to the Labadi beach clubs, it is out of date.
The La Traditional Council and the beach management say La Pleasure Beach should reopen in basic form by mid-November, with vendors told not to rebuild permanent structures. The land dispute with SSNIT is unresolved. Go, but expect less, and support the vendors who are left. The full story: Labadi: twenty-five years on.
West of Accra, across a short boat ride. The best day option near the city. Cleaner and calmer than Labadi ever was, but it fills up on December weekends, so go early.
Music, a looser crowd and places to sleep. Better for an overnight stay than a quick trip, given the December traffic out of Accra.
If you want a real beach holiday, leave Accra. The coast between Cape Coast and Axim is far better. See Central Region beaches and Western Region beaches.
Swimming: rip currents along Ghana's coast are strong and lifeguards are rare. Do not swim after drinking, and never swim alone. All Accra options are on Greater Accra beaches.

December is dry season and Harmattan: dusty haze from the Sahara, cooler mornings and good roads in the north. It is the best month of the year to see the country, if you leave the capital.

Road times lie. Accra to Cape Coast is 145 km. In December traffic it can take five hours. Never plan to arrive somewhere unfamiliar after dark, and read Travel Ghana: the road guide before you book a self-drive car.
December prices in Accra have nothing to do with the rest of the year. Rooms double or triple, short lets want payment in full months ahead, drivers set their own rates, and event tickets bought late cost several times the early price. Book early, book traceably, and pay through a method that leaves a record.
Book by October if you can. Insist on a confirmation that names the property, the address and the dates. Never pay a deposit by Mobile Money to someone you only know from social media. Hotels by region: GhanaHotels.biz.

If you are asked to pay duty on goods, insist on an official assessment notice, pay only through approved channels and keep the receipt. An undocumented "settlement" is not a duty payment.
Ghana is not a dangerous country, and most Decembers pass without incident for most visitors. But crime rises over the Christmas period every year, because the money, the crowds and the visitors all arrive at once. Scammers plan for December the same way the promoters do.
Resold tickets on Instagram and WhatsApp, cloned QR codes, "VIP upgrades" paid by Mobile Money. Buy only from the organiser or their named ticket platform.
Drivers who claim your driver sent them. Short lets that do not exist, or exist but were never the advertiser's to rent. Check the property and the host before you pay anything.
Last December, visitors reported being stopped and extorted by people posing as police. Real officers can show identification. Do not hand over money or your phone at a roadside stop without it, and call your host or embassy if you feel unsafe.
