Ghana has two World Heritage sites, both inscribed more than forty-five years ago. Six more have waited on the Tentative List since 17 January 2000, and not one has been nominated since. Add three UNESCO biosphere reserves, and this is the complete list, with what each site really looks like today and how to see it.
One of the first sites in Africa ever inscribed: the chain of European forts, castles and ruins from Keta to Beyin, with Elmina, Cape Coast and Christiansborg at its heart. Several of the listed forts are ruined, eroded or lived in.

A Tentative List is a country's official statement that it intends to nominate a site. Ghana submitted all six of these on 17 January 2000. In more than a quarter of a century, none has gone forward.

A World Heritage nomination needs years of research, maps, a management plan and legal protection for the site. Ghana's heritage agencies have not produced one for any of the six sites in over two decades.

Ghana was one of the first African countries on the World Heritage List, and it has added nothing since 1980. Its six tentative sites are among the finest in West Africa: a mud cathedral, a sacred rock landscape, a stilt village, the northern mosques, and two national parks. They have been waiting since January 2000, while other countries in the region have nominated and won. The problem is not the sites. It is the will, the money and the institutions to do the paperwork and protect what already has the title. Visit them anyway. Most are better than their UNESCO status suggests.
