Sir William Baffin (circa 1584 – 1622) – English explorer and navigator known for his significant contributions to early European exploration of West Africa’s coastline and the Arctic. Baffin served as a pilot on several important voyages in the early 17th century, helping to map parts of the West African coast and later searching for the Northwest Passage in the Arctic. His accurate observations and charts improved European knowledge of these regions. Though more famously associated with Arctic exploration, his work along West Africa laid groundwork for future trade and navigation efforts. Baffin’s explorations influenced English maritime ambitions during a period of expanding global reach. He died during an expedition in 1622.
