Umbrella Rock: A Natural Marvel Near Boti Falls, Ghana

Perched high in the hills of Ghana’s Eastern Region, not far from the famed Boti Falls, lies one of the country’s most intriguing natural landmarks — Umbrella Rock. This unique geological formation is both a wonder of nature and a popular destination for tourists, hikers, and photographers seeking stunning views and a memorable experience off the beaten path.

With its massive, umbrella-shaped rock balanced dramatically atop a narrow base, the formation appears almost surreal — as if placed deliberately for artistic effect. Yet it is entirely natural, sculpted by centuries of erosion, weathering, and time.

A Natural Wonder with a View

Umbrella Rock gets its name from its distinctive shape: a large, flat boulder balanced atop a slender rock pillar, creating a natural canopy that resembles a giant umbrella. Visitors can actually stand underneath the rock, which provides not only shade but also a perfect backdrop for eye-catching photos.

More than just a curiosity, Umbrella Rock offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the lush green forests, farmlands, and rolling hills of the Eastern Region. On a clear day, the vantage point allows you to take in the breathtaking beauty of the Ghanaian landscape — an experience that combines serenity, natural grandeur, and a sense of adventure.

Location and How to Get There

Umbrella Rock is located in the Yilo Krobo District, close to the village of Akyeremateng, and about a 10- to 15-minute hike from Boti Falls — making it a perfect addition to any visit to the falls. The site is approximately 90 to 100 kilometers northeast of Accra, and can be reached by road in about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Directions from Accra:

  1. Take the Accra-Tema Motorway and join the Accra-Koforidua Road (N4).

  2. Drive to Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region.

  3. From Koforidua, continue toward Boti Falls (about 30-40 minutes).

  4. At the Boti Falls visitor center, local guides are available to lead you on the hike to Umbrella Rock.

The hike to Umbrella Rock is moderately challenging, with uneven terrain and some uphill sections, so it’s recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. Along the way, you may also pass other natural attractions, including the Three-Headed Palm Tree, another curious and photogenic site in the area.
